Wings not shipped!! 1

Based on the information provided by Van’s I was expecting the wings to arrive any day.  I still hadn’t heard anything from the shipping company, so I called Van’s to find out what was going on.  To my surprise, I was told the wings had not shipped!  They had told me both by letter and on the phone that all was on schedule for them to ship the week of 19 August (that’s with the carrier no later than 23 August).  Apparently they ran out of leading edge skins and had to make more so my kit is still sitting in Oregon.  Ann said they would call me as soon as they ship which they expect to be by this Friday.  Fingers crossed!

This blog is called N888PB for a reason.  I’ve reserved N888PB with the FAA as the eventual registration number for my RV-8.  I got to thinking today.  Three “8”s in a row is a mouthful.  In fact if you count it out the entire registration becomes 7 syllables!  (In case you haven’t figured it out, the eights are for the RV model, and the letters are my initials… kind of lame)

But you know what?  I don’t think I care what my N-Number is!  I do care that its easy to spit out on the radio.  Minimum syllables.  With that in mind, I went to the FAA website today in search of the shortest available number measured in syllables.  The shortest I could find was 21W which turns out to be four syllables.  It does roll off the tongue much easier than 888PB. I can imagine saying “Tower, Experimental Two One Whiskey 3 miles east with information bravo.”  Compare that with “Tower, Experimental Eight Eight Eight Papa Bravo 3 miles east with information bravo.”  Yeah, the first one is much less of a mouthful.  Reserving N-Numbers only costs $10 per number per year, so I reserved 21W.  I’m still not sure which one I’ll use, but I’ve got at least a year!  Maybe something shorter will become available… 🙂

Empennage.  The only thing remaining before I begin the wings is for me to roll the leading edges of both elevators.  I’ve been putting it off because it is kind of a pain in the ass.

Wings.  I had hoped, based on the shipping estimate provided by Van’s, that my wings would arrive prior to this long holiday weekend.  Unfortunately, they did not.  Any day now!  I’ll post more as soon as they show up. I did do some minor shop setup over the weekend.  I labeled containers and organized tools and shelving in final preparation for the wings.  Cheers.

Flying with Jack 3   Recently updated !

Being lazy, I have still not added the charter members to the EAA Chapter 1384 website for the First Mid-Atlantic Gathering of RV’s held in July. Jack met me at the airport to give me the registration documents so I could add the names. Of course, going to the airport always results in plenty of hangar talk and Jack asked if I had time to go for a flight. I always have time for a flight! I told Jack I’d buy him lunch at the Airways Inn in Frederick so off we went.

The first two photographs are of Jack’s beautifully restored 1975 Triumph TR6 in British racing green. Fantastic automobile. 20130831-163837.jpg

Here is Jack’s RV-8 which has been on this blog previously. You can see he has added the RV Gathering sticker to the fuselage just forward of the canopy.20130831-163856.jpg

We met another RV builder at Airway’s inn, Rob, who invited us to see his RV-4 nearing completion. 20130831-163921.jpg

Next door was a Ford Tractor Blue RV-12 also nearing completion.20130831-163930.jpg

These allow the aircraft to be moved sideways for storing two aircraft in one hangar and allowing each plane to be easily taken in and out. Unfortunately this design doesn’t work if you have wheel pants, but its gotten me thinking about some potential solutions. I want to find a hangar mate to reduce hangar costs and a little basic welding should make a good solution… I’ll have to give this some more thought down the line.20130831-163937.jpg

Here’s a self shot with the canopy open during taxi. Today was typical east coast weather… hazy and humid. Perfect weather for a slider canopy.20130831-164006.jpg

I used my cheap MotionX GPS on my iPhone again to record the flight stats. According to Jack’s stats we burned about 6.5 GPH and that comes out to about 26 – 28 MPG with a 190 HP IO-360. Not too shabby! I like the ECI kit engine choice. On the way back, Jack gave me some stick time. As always, the RV’s are impressive. Light and responsive I was able to fly with two fingers. The stick position in the rear seat is perfect. Great fun!20130831-164329.jpg
